UX Design -
College Foundation

Overview

This project shows a test sample of an NC student loan account within the College Foundation platform. This particular page focuses on designing a Duplicate Statement Recipient interface. The system allows users to designate a person, such as a parent, financial advisor, or guardian, to receive copies of their loan statements.

Because the loan program serves a wide demographic, the interface needed to accommodate students and borrowers ranging from ages 18 to 45. This created a unique UX challenge: designing an experience that felt modern and intuitive for younger users while remaining familiar and accessible to older users who may be less comfortable with newer digital interfaces.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was designing an interface that balanced modern usability with familiarity with the age range of the target audience.

Key considerations included:

  1. Younger users expect clean layouts and streamlined workflows.
  2. Older users may prefer clear labels, structured forms, and predictable navigation.
  3. Financial platforms require clarity, trust, and transparency.
  4. The design needed to remain relevant as younger users become the majority of borrowers.

The goal was to create a system that does not feel outdated today but will also transition naturally as the user demographic evolves.

Design Strategy

To address this challenge, the design focused on timeless usability patterns instead of trend-based UI design.

  1. Familiar Layout Patterns: The interface uses a structured dashboard layout with a left navigation panel and a main content area. This pattern is common in banking platforms and reduces the learning curve for older users.
  2. Clear Form Structure: Forms are presented in a simple vertical flow, which helps users complete tasks quickly without feeling overwhelmed.
  3. Fields are grouped logically: Personal information, Contact information, and Address details. This improves readability and reduces cognitive load.
  4. Account Visibility: Users can clearly see which accounts will send statements to the selected recipient. Providing visibility prevents confusion and reduces the likelihood of mistakes when managing multiple loan accounts.

Designing for a Multi-Generational Audience

To support both younger and older users, several UX principles were applied:

  • Simplicity over novelty: The interface avoids overly modern or experimental design patterns that might confuse older users.
  • Consistent navigation: The persistent side panel helps users maintain orientation within the platform.
  • Readable typography: Large labels and clearly spaced fields improve usability across age groups.
  • Minimal cognitive load: Each screen focuses on one task at a time to reduce complexity.

Future Ideas

The clean layout allows for future enhancements such as:

  • Mobile responsiveness
  • Progressive onboarding flows
  • Simplified account management features

This ensures the platform can gradually evolve as the user base becomes more digitally native.

Tools Used

  • Figma: Used for wireframing, high-fidelity design, and responsive layout creation across desktop and mobile. Leveraged components and auto layout to ensure consistency, scalability, and efficient iteration throughout the design process.

Outcome

The final design provides a clear and accessible experience for managing statement recipients while supporting the needs of a diverse user demographic.

The solution balances:

  • Usability
  • Trust
  • Clarity
  • Long-term adaptability
